Q: I’ve recently been prescribed a blood thinning medication called Coumadin® (Warfarin Sodium). I’ve been told that I need to watch my diet and should be concerned if I have bleeding problems. How can I be sure that I’m maintaining a safe medication regimen?
Many of my patients are currently taking anticoagulation (blood thinning) medication. This type of medication, like Coumadin®, is important in preventing the formation of blood clots and preventing extension of clots already formed. It also minimizes the risk of blood clot embolization to vital organs such as the lungs and brain.
While this medication is very important for your health, it can cause serious and life-threatening bleeding problems if not taken appropriately. It’s essential that you follow your doctor’s instructions, such as taking your medication at the same time everyday; eat a balanced diet, but, avoid large amounts of leafy green vegetables; avoid alcohol and have regular blood tests. These are just a few of the restrictions for this drug and your doctor will provide more in-depth information regarding side effects, other drug interactions and any additional limitations.
