Helping You Recover
Urinary or Fecal Diversion (Ostomy)
Nearly one-million people in North America have ostomies and 70,000 new ostomy surgeries are performed each year. People learn to lead very normal lives with temporary and permanent ostomies of all kinds. They work, have children, eat well, travel and lead active lives.
The Role of the Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse
People with ostomies, fistulas, incontinence, non-healing wounds and pressure ulcers have special needs. Recognizing those needs, Lakewood Hospital employs a team of nurses, called Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) nurses, who are specifically devoted to helping patients overcome initial anxiety or insecurity they may feel.
Credentials / Experience
Our WOC nurses are board-certified in wound, ostomy and continence care. They stay up-to-date on the latest equipment and treatment programs, and quickly make such innovations available to patients. Our WOC nurses provide care and counseling for more than 3,800 adult patient each year.

How the WOC Nurse Can Help You
The WOC nurse cares for patients with colostomies, conventional and continent ileostomies, urostomies and fistulas. While the WOC nurse does not function as a patient’s primary nurse, their goal is to help ensure a smooth recovery and to return the patient to normal daily life as quickly as possible.
A WOC nurses offers:
- Pre-operative counseling and helps a patient prepare for surgery
- Inform patient about what to expect before and after surgery
- Assist in finding the best spot on the abdomen for the surgeon to create the stoma, or opening that will help ensure both comfort and a reliable seal with the ostomy pouch
- After surgery, WOC nurses provide instruction on techniques, appliances and equipment necessary to care for an ostomy, and on ways to protect the skin with low-profile, odor-proof pouching systems
- Provides instruction by phone after the patient is discharged from the hospital
- Outpatient consultation with ostomy patients
A physician referral is necessary to schedule a consultation.
Wound and Pressure Ulcer Care
Our WOC nurses have a strong background in wound and pressure ulcer care. They serve as a resource in caring for inpatients with chronic wounds and pressure ulcers.
Incontinence Care
We can help patients with skin care and odor management by helping to identify the best collection or absorption device and skin care products and will instruct patients in their proper use.
Wound Care Clinic
To relieve pain and speed healing, Lakewood Hospital’s Wound Care Clinic assists the medical staff in the development of a comprehensive care plan that includes evaluation and treatment of existing wounds as well as education about how to prevent future wounds. A physician referral is required for the Wound Care Clinic.
