Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program designed to help you develop an understanding of lung disease, to improve your ability to perform everyday activities and to teach you ways to improve your breathing.

Inpatient Program
The inpatient program occurs during a patient’s stay in the hospital. At the request of their physician, patients are visited by a member of the pulmonary rehabilitation staff and given information about their individual disease/condition, breathing technique instructions, and information about the outpatient programs.

Are you a candidate for Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

You will benefit from pulmonary rehabilitation if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with a pulmonary disease, including emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, or pulmonary fibrosis, whether it is newly diagnosed or a chronic condition
  • Become short of breath with mild or moderate exertion
  • Want to learn more about your lung disease, using your medications, conserving your energy or just breathing better
  • Want to live the best life you can with lung disease

Outpatient Program

You must have a referral from your physician to participate in the outpatient program. The multidisciplinary team, with help from your physician, develops an education and exercise program customized to your needs. Outpatient sessions include instructor guided breathing technique exercises, group exercises focusing on energy conservation, strengthening of the upper body, and the use of aerobic equipment such as treadmills and stationary bikes (if appropriate). The primary goal of the program is to slow the progression of pulmonary damage and delay onset of more serious impairment while restoring patients to highest degree of functioning possible.

Lakewood Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation is divided into two phases:

Phase II

Phase II outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an intensive program held three days a week for 10 weeks. This program requires physician referral and pulmonary function test. Most insurance companies cover participation if specific criteria are met. This program also offers patient and family education, emotional support and physical conditioning gradually increasing from seated chair exercises, to the use of equipment. The staff also will provide educational information and support to assist you in meeting your individual goals.

Maintenance Program

This is a comprehensive program organized to assist patients in the maintenance of an active and productive lifestyle compatible with their specific disease condition. This program is offered two or three times per week. You must have your physician’s permission to participate in the exercise program. This program is not covered by insurance companies, but is offered for a nominal fee. Patients enrolled are encouraged to become more independent with the ability to monitor their symptoms. This program will also give patients the opportunity to meet others who are enduring similar life experiences.
