March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
Are you at risk?
Colorectal Cancer, commonly referred to as colon cancer, is cancer of the colon and / or rectum. It is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. However, it is one of the easiest cancers to prevent since it develops from polyps that can be removed before they become cancerous.
Fortunately, according the American Cancer Society, the death rate from colon caner has been dropping for more than 20 years. The likely reason for this decline is that polyps are being found by screening and removed before they can develop into cancers. Screening is allowing more cases of colon cancer to be found earlier when the disease is easier to cure. Therefore, early detection through regular screenings is vital.
Lakewood Hospital Digestive Health Center offers a highly skilled team of physicians and nurses who will answer your questions and assist in scheduling your colorectal screening.
