Ask a Doctor

Fady Nageeb, MD
Cleveland Clinic Pain Management Center at Lakewood Hospital

Q. I have severe back pain that comes and goes and has become bothersome; it also limits my daily activities. How can I manage this pain?

Unfortunately, back pain is very common and will more than likely interfere with your quality of life. Back pain may be caused by muscle, nerve or joint pain as well as a herniated disc. Other causes, such as osteoarthritis or lumbar stenosis, are more prevalent in older patients.

Oftentimes, back pain is accompanied by shooting pain down the legs or weakness or numbness in the legs. Back pain of this type usually indicates a pinched nerve or herniated disc.

On the other hand, lower back pain that persists but is not accompanied by any shooting pains, numbness or weakness in the legs could indicate that the problem is originating from a disc or the joints in the disc. Joint disc pain is usually triggered by unusual twisting of the back, heavy lifting or whiplash that occurs during an accident.

If you tried to alleviate your pain with over-the-counter medications, heating pads and limited activity and still experience the pain, it’s time to consider pain management options.

With a physician’s referral, you may want to visit the Cleveland Clinic Pain Management Center at Lakewood Hospital. The center is staffed with experienced physicians specializing in pain management as well as a team of specialists including psychologists, pharmacists, registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. The team will design a treatment program to address your specific needs and you will receive comprehensive and specialized care.

Depending on a person’s condition, there are several procedures offered at the center that may help with controlling persistent pain, including epidural steroid injection, facet nerve block, intercostal nerve block, lumbar sympathetic block, celiac plexus block, trigger point injections, radiofrequency ablation and hypogastric plexus block.

Dr. Nageeb specializes in chronic pain management and he is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. His treatment interests include back pain, abdominal pain and postoperative pain.
