In a clear emergency, getting to the hospital is a no-brainer. But what about when your symptoms aren't as severe? How do you know when it's time to visit the emergency room?
Certain conditions require a visit to the ER. The following are just a few signs that it’s time to go:
• Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
• Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure
• Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness
• Changes in vision
• Confusion or changes in mental status
• Any sudden or severe pain
• Uncontrolled bleeding
• Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Coughing or vomiting blood
• Difficulty speaking
• Shortness of breath
• Unusual abdominal pain
“Typically, any signs of a heart attack, stroke, meningitis or injuries occurring from an accident require an ER visit,” explains Laura Dollison, DO, FACEP, director of Lakewood Hospital’s emergency services. “Trust your gut. If you feel there is an emergency, go to the ER. If you think the situation is life-threatening or that the person's condition will worsen on the way to the hospital, call 9-1-1.”
The Lakewood Hospital ER is equipped to treat all patients — even the most critically ill and injured.
