Childbirth Classes Offer Unexpected Benefits

When Mary Dunne took childbirth classes at Lakewood Hospital five years ago, she had high expectations for a good educational experience. Not only did the classes prepare her for labor and delivery, they also provided her with friendships that have endured ever since.

“It really is pretty unique,” says Dunne, a teacher and Lakewood resident. “Out of nine families originally in the class, seven of us still keep in touch on different levels. We are a great support system for each other.”

The families get together for an annual August birthday party honoring their first-born children, who originally brought them together in 2003. They also have holiday parties and a winter potluck where the adults commiserate and the kids play. Since 2003, each of the families has expanded, all having their second child around the same time as well.

In addition to get-togethers, Dunne and many of her former classmates talk by phone nearly every day. This support system has helped the group deal with many issues related to child raising, providing a sounding board for advice and friendship as their families continue to grow.

"I knew the childbirth classes would be a learning experience, but I didn’t know they would be so life changing,” Dunne explains. “These girls are my best friends now. I don’t know what I would do without them.”
