Initial Education

The Division of Initial Training provides First Responder through EMT-Paramedic certification courses. With the variety of resources available in the Cleveland Clinic System, students are provided clinical opportunities that will help to develop their knowledge and skills over and above that of other programs. We also provide EMS field internship opportunities with Cleveland EMS, numerous EMS Organizations and Regional Fire Departments. The goal of the Division of Initial EMS Education is to facilitate sound academic, clinical, and field opportunities with the leadership of healthcare providers who have fashioned the EMS profession.

Continuing Education
The EMS Academy's Division of EMS Continuing Education is designed for those who want to be challenged and improve their career with education and practicum through unparallel educational offerings.

We offer the quality continuing education that is essential in maintaining and further developing the EMS professional.  By pursuing quality education, we believe the direct result will be improved patient care.

Our courses are offered in a variety of ways that work with the busy lives of EMS professionals.  We have educators from across the country that have prepared lectures that are available for your convenience on-line.  Our Continuing Education courses, lectures and labs are provided throughout the year at our new training center, or right at your department/service.

A complete listing of scheduled offerings can be found on our Web site.  Click here to access the site.

Certified Intensive Care Paramedic:
Setting a New Education Standard in Paramedic Advanced Practice

The Certified Intensive Care Paramedic (CICP) program establishes the new national educational standard for paramedics seeking to advance their career to the critical care level. Working with the Association of Air Medical Services we have established the curriculum that will provide you with the education, knowledge, skills-sets, and critical thinking that is required at this level.

Realizing the time limitations of students, the Division of Critical Care Education, in conjunction with the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS), has created an entire pre-course component on-line for easy access. Students can begin the CICP pre-course curriculum as early as 90 days before the class begins.

The classroom didactic/lab component consists of 88 hours of lecture and lab. Students are not only instructed on the "why and when," but practice the "how" to initiate the development of critical thinking at the advanced level.

The written final examination for the CICP program, provided through the Board of Critical Care Transport Paramedic Certification (BCCTPC), is the Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C) Exam. Skills proficiency is also evaluated for each student on the final day of the class.

Observe, Assist, and Perform -- The clinical component allows the participants to put it all together by actually being in the intensive care setting at various locations throughout the Cleveland Clinic Health Systems, as well as with various critical care transport services.

Physicians, Nurses and Paramedics - all nationally recognized leaders in their discipline - author the topics that you want and need to know, and serve as the instructors for the program.
